Freelancer Rights

The FREELANCE ISN’T FREE ACT went into effect in New York City on May 15, 2017. This law establishes and enhances protections for freelance workers, including freelancers’ rights to:

  • WRITTEN CONTRACTS FOR WORK WORTH $800 OR MORE
  • TIMELY AND FULL PAYMENT FOR COMPLETED WORK
  • PROTECTION FROM RETALIATION FOR ENFORCING RIGHTS UNDER THE ACT

In addition, the law establishes penalties for violations of these rights, including statutory damages, double damages, injunctive relief, and attorney’s fees.
